Battle
A lonely echo of deep sorrow
Died in the silver moonlight stream
‘Twas harvest moon, though light was dim.
A path surrounded with roses
Led to the battlefield of night
Where dwelt the ghosts o’ finished fight.
The lights of stars were flickering above your head;
The endless space of black-blue sky.
There were no end, and no beginning;
Eternal present o’ someone’s chilling sigh.
And only darkness crept beside
An’ wrapped you up in the velvet night.
The raven’s cry disturb’d the dreamful slumber;
The sinister omen of approaching fight.
There were broken splinters of silence around
And they were shimmering in the starlight.
And at the forgotten altar o’ vice
Soon there would be the last sacrifice.
The Lord of night appeared in the gloom;
He was intending to cross swords with day
The raven croaked and sat on his hand
Alas! It had hunger for its own prey!
So they stood quietly before the battlefield
Imagining how the gallows would be built.
The clear tinkle of new day was growing ahead;
Its joyous rays flashed through the dark.
And in the somber sky he soared
And sang a song, brave little lark.
But like a lightning th’ raven rushed by
And there was heard th’ lark’s dying cry.
The Lord of Darkness curl’d his lips in smirk;
‘Twas pleasure for his foul soul.
The stunning rattle shook the evil world
And near him he heard beasts’ growl.
Evil crawl’d out of its hideous den,
At last the war of Dark and Light began.
There was no morn to come in time, alas!
For long the Sun refused to shine.
She couldn’t brook to cast her rays on Earth
The graves she was afraid to illumine.
And when through clouds cautiously she peered
She found that in vain she feared.
Behold! The gentle sounds of a harp were soothing;
The serenity of land, ‘twas wonder.
And merrily the river’s waters sparkled
For Dark and Light were wide asunder
And still was heard the song of lark
And sky was crossed by divine arc
Between two mighty realms the battle
Was ended with the win of day.
But was it final end? Oh, nay!
This fiend conquered for a moment
Will for forever dwell in night
To take revenge in other fight.
