A little tragedy
The day was waken’d with a sunrise fair,
Fresh breeze was wandering through trees;
The noise of buzzing fill’d the morning air -
Midst daffodils flew pompous bees.
Lull’d by the gale, she revel’d in the light
Amid the blossom of a rose;
A butterfly with wings of colours bright
Was still in a sweet-scented doze.
Will noticed first a rose’s loveliest flower,
And look’d upon it in delight.
Lo! A butterfly was in this bower,
With wondrous wings of colours bright.
In vain to stop his friend poor William tried,
When in the air something flash’d.
“No! Don’t even dare touch it!” then he cried.
But it was late, frail wings were crush’d.
And in emerald grass she found her grave,
While her little soul to heavens flew.
And upon the ethereal wind she wave
To the world her silent adieu.
